Play and Attachment in the Two-Month-Old

When you play with your baby, he plays back through his cooing, focused or wide eyes, kicking legs, brightening face, raised eyebrows, smiles, and vocalizations. He can purse his lips into an “O,” making an “oooh” sound, perhaps followed by tongue clicking. Doing all this, the baby is intensively interacting with his caregiver, and it’s a sign of positive play at this age. You will begin to learn what your baby likes as you watch his facial expressions, body movements, and vocalizations. Your baby signals negative emotions as clearly as positive ones, and you can learn to recognize these too. When your baby needs to disengage, he might turn his head away, lower his eyes, or show a frown. By verbalizing his feelings for him, saying “you’re tired of this now” or “you didn’t like that,” you show your baby that you understand him and will respond sensitively to his needs. You will also begin to understand what he likes and doesn’t like. This is attunement. Reading your baby’s internal, nonverbal state and responding to him with sensitivity gives your baby a feeling of security.
